Krystal Barrows

Krystal Barrows, formerly known as Krystal Ellingson, and I want to share a little about my Dog Training approach.

I truly value education and seek out knowledge from other trainers and nationally established dog training organizations.  Presently, I hold the following credentials and affiliations:

  • Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers – Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge and Skills Assessed (CPDT-KSA)
The only independent and international psychometrically sound professional dog trainer assessment. This agency assesses knowledge of the science of dog training and has an experiential requirement as well as requiring certificants to actually demonstrate hands on dog training skills with absolute proficiency through several training exercises. This certification requires continuing education to maintain – guaranteeing current knowledge of the latest and most effective techniques.

  • International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants – Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC)
The International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants is a multi divisional organization where members work with animals of all sorts. Krystal is a consultant of the dog division.

  • Association of Professional Dog Trainers Professional Premium Member
The Association of Pet Dog Trainers is a professional organization of dog trainers who are committed to becoming better trainers through education. Professional membership is only available to members who have earned their certification(s) from an approved organization recognized by the APDT Board of Directors.

  • Association of Professional Dog Trainers C.L.A.S.S. Evaluator
This program promotes training focused on the use of positive reinforcement and to strengthen relationships between humans and their canine companions. C.L.A.S.S. stands for Canine Life and Social Skills and is about teaching and appreciating real life, practical skills, such as walking nicely on a leash, settling down, meeting strangers, table manners, attention, and coming when called, just to name a few.

  • Animal Behavior College –  Mentor Trainer/Field Professor
Animal Behavior College requires all of its students to go through an externship with one of their Mentor Trainers before being able to graduate. As contracted by ABC it is Krystal’s job as a Mentor Trainer to make sure the students apprenticing under her can effectively apply theory to real world situations.

  • American Kennel Club
    S.T.A.R Puppy Evaluator
This is a program put forth to start puppies off, in their homes, for success. Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsibility – don’t think your puppy will be the only one evaluated here!

  • Love on a Leash – Therapy Dog Evaluator & Handler
The Foundation for Pet Provided Therapy also known as Love on a Leash is a not for profit, charitable organization that encourages volunteerism. Dog assisted therapy is not only something Krystal evaluates for, it is something she participates in. Both Shasta & Tahoe (Krystal’s Great Danes) are certified Therapy Dogs through LOAL. (Shasta even has an advanced degree (ThD) involving children’s reading programs.)

  • CATCH, Canine Trainers Academy Official Mentor Trainer
Canine Trainers Academy requires their students to work closely with a Mentor Trainer. As a Mentor Trainer it is our job to be sure the student is educated on proper training techniques and to be sure they are able to perform training duties fluently. Mentor Trainers also help instruct on dog related behavior solutions to prepare the dog trainer in training for their career in the field.

In addition to Speak Dog Krystal continues to hone her skills. Within another organization, there are many opportunities for specialized training.  She is certified by this organization in the following:

  • Pet Nutrition Certification
Being certified in pet nutrition Krystal is highly knowledgeable about ingredients and quality, the components of nutrition and how they are used and absorbed in the body of dogs (and cats).

  • Dog Trainer Institute (Dog Training Instructor Program or DTIP) – Mentor/Coach
As a mentor/coach Krystal is certified to teach other dog trainers to train dogs. The Dog Training Instructor Program requires its own certification involving both workshop assessment and written assessment.

American Red Cross Pet First Aid & CPR
This pet first aid training provides education on about what to do until you can get a dog to a veterinarian or vet technician. Educational topics included splinting, wound care, poisoning, and other common issues.
