An important part of behavior modification that is often overlooked is why the behavior is present in the first place. Before undergoing a behavior modification plan make sure your dog fits in to the following:
Behavior modification can take time. As dog owners, we need to be patient with the dog and do everything we can to help them through the process. There are many ways to go about behavior modification but instead of trying lots of things for a short while each, give each method time before moving to the next one. Remember, behavior modification should be humane and stress levels should be kept low to avoid making the behavior worse.
Since there is not a one size fits all answer for modifying behavior, see your trainer for a plan made just for you and your dog.
- Is in good health.
- Exercise requirements are being met.
- Is given a proper outlet (chewing on toys instead of our things).
- Will be given mental stimulation.
- Family members are consistent.
- Follow up regularly with a professional.
